Milano Hockey Club History – A New Chapter for Milan’s Ice Hockey Tradition

Milano Hockey Club represents a new beginning for professional ice hockey in Milan. Founded in 2026, the club entered the ICE Hockey League with red-and-blue colours and an international outlook. Its own history is young, but the project draws inspiration from a city where hockey has been played and supported for more than a century.

A City Tradition Dating Back to 1924

The first Hockey Club Milano was founded in 1924. Over the following decades, different Milanese teams helped shape Italian hockey, while venues including the Palazzo del Ghiaccio, the Forum and the Agorà became familiar homes for players and supporters. These earlier organisations created a rich sporting heritage. The present Milano Hockey Club embraces that background while remaining a distinct organisation with its own founding date and sporting record.

2026: A New Club Joins the ICE Hockey League

The new company was founded on 7 April 2026. In June, Milano was admitted to the ICE Hockey League as its fourteenth member. At the club’s first press conference, president Christof Leitner outlined ambitions extending beyond the professional team to youth and women’s hockey. Nick Saracino was introduced as the first player signing. The announcement marked the beginning of building a new roster and organisation for international competition.

September 2026: A Winning Competitive Debut

Milano played its first official match on 18 September 2026, away against Innsbruck. Coach Doug Shedden’s team won 3–1, giving the new club an immediate league victory. Blake McLaughlin scored Milano’s opening goal, Michael Dal Colle restored the lead after Innsbruck equalised, and Diego Cuglietta completed the scoring into an empty net. The result gave travelling supporters a memorable first competitive evening.

The Fiera Ice Arena and a Long-Term Project

The Fiera Ice Arena in Rho became Milano’s home, with its first home league match taking place on 9 October 2026. Alongside the senior team, the wider project includes Milano HC Prospects, dedicated to youth development and women’s hockey. The aim is to establish lasting pathways for local players while creating a new gathering place for Milan’s hockey community.
