GDT Bellinzona Snakes – Club History
GDT Bellinzona Snakes represent the capital of Ticino in the Swiss League. Their story brings together two different traditions: GDT Bellinzona’s local hockey organisation, founded in 1972, and the second-division Rockets project, which began playing in Biasca in 2016. The move to Bellinzona and the subsequent Snakes identity connected these paths around a shared focus on developing young players.
GDT Bellinzona’s Roots in Youth Hockey
GDT Bellinzona was founded on 22 September 1972 by a group of local hockey supporters. The name stands for Giovani Discatori Turrita and reflects the organisation’s connection to Bellinzona. Youth development became a central part of its work, giving children and teenagers opportunities to learn and play hockey. This local foundation predates the Swiss League team and is an important part of the organisation behind today’s Snakes.
From Ticino Rockets to Bellinzona Rockets
The Swiss League team’s sporting lineage goes back to the Ticino Rockets, who entered Switzerland’s second division in 2016 and played in Biasca. The project offered young players a route towards senior professional hockey. In 2023, the team moved to Bellinzona and became the Bellinzona Rockets. GDT Bellinzona and HC Ambrì-Piotta provided the organisational framework, while partnerships with other clubs helped create opportunities for developing players.
The Bellinzona Snakes Identity
In 2024, the team adopted the name GDT Bellinzona Snakes. As part of the reorganisation, GDT Bellinzona increased its shareholding to 70%, with HC Ambrì-Piotta holding the remaining 30%. The agreement maintained the partnership in player development and strengthened the team’s connection to the local organisation. Competing in the Swiss League, the Snakes provide young players with experience against established senior teams and a platform for the next stage of their careers.
