HC Ambrì-Piotta – Club History
HC Ambrì-Piotta represents the villages of Ambrì and Piotta in Ticino’s Leventina valley. Founded in 1937, the club has become a distinctive part of Swiss ice hockey, combining deep regional roots with memorable achievements at home and abroad.
A Club Born in the Leventina Valley
Founded in 1937, Ambrì-Piotta developed from a village club into a familiar name in Swiss hockey. Its first promotion to the Nationalliga A came in 1953. Another important turning point arrived in 1985, when the club returned to the highest division, beginning a long period at the top level.
European Trophies and the 1999 Swiss Final
The late 1990s brought some of Ambrì-Piotta’s greatest achievements. The club won the Continental Cup in 1998 and 1999 and added the European Super Cup in 1999. That same year, Ambrì reached its first Swiss championship playoff final, facing cantonal rivals HC Lugano in an all-Ticino showdown.
A New Home and Spengler Cup Glory
In 2021, the Gottardo Arena became the club’s new home, succeeding the historic Valascia. Another unforgettable celebration followed in December 2022, when Ambrì-Piotta won the Spengler Cup for the first time. A dramatic 3–2 shootout victory over Sparta Prague brought the prestigious trophy to the Leventina valley.
