HC Lugano – Club History

HC Lugano is one of Switzerland’s most successful ice hockey clubs and an important part of sporting life in Ticino. Known as the Bianconeri for their black and white colours, the club has built a history shaped by seven Swiss championships, international appearances and a strong connection with the Lugano region.

From Lake Muzzano to Switzerland’s Top Division

Hockey Club Lugano was officially founded on 11 February 1941 at the Ristorante Apollo in Lugano. Its earliest hockey activities took place on the natural ice of Lake Muzzano. In 1948, the club moved to the Loreto neighbourhood, bringing the sport closer to the city. Promotion to the highest national division in 1982 provided the starting point for a remarkable period of success.

The Grande Lugano Era and Seven Swiss Titles

Lugano won its first Swiss championship in 1986 under coach John Slettvoll, beginning the celebrated Grande Lugano era. Further titles followed in 1987, 1988 and 1990. The club returned to the top in 1999, 2003 and 2006, bringing its total to seven national championships. These achievements established HC Lugano as a major force in Swiss hockey, with appearances in European competitions adding an international dimension to its history.

The Resega and Today’s Cornèr Arena

The Resega name is closely associated with HC Lugano. The current arena opened in 1995 and became the setting for the championship victories of 1999, 2003 and 2006. Renamed Cornèr Arena in 2018, it remains the club’s home. Beyond the men’s first team, the venue has also hosted successful junior and women’s teams, reflecting the wider role of hockey in the local sporting community.
